Why people stay in Historic Main Street

Historic Main Street is the ribbon of red brick and painted signs running south from the courthouse to 8th Avenue. Most buildings date from 1880-1910 and half still have the original tin ceilings inside. It's not a museum district — these are working shops, law offices, and a couple of restaurants — but it's the part of Springfield that photographs well and rewards a slow morning walk with coffee in hand.

This isn’t a destination on its own; it's a 90-minute experience folded into a Downtown stay. Come at 10am when shops open, leave by 2pm before things get sleepy. Skip if you’re expecting boutiques with Nashville prices — most stores here are antiques, hardware, and one very good bookshop. Great for retirees, photographers, and anyone who wants small-town Tennessee without the theme-park version.

There are no hotels directly on Main Street; the closest beds are along Memorial Boulevard one block east, $85-$130 a night. A couple of restored houses on 6th Avenue West offer B&B rooms in the $110-$140 range — book direct, not through third-party sites, to avoid a $30 markup. Avoid anything more than four blocks from Main; the walkable magic dies fast once you cross Central Avenue.

Getting around Historic Main Street

You’re already downtown if you’re on Main Street. From Nashville International: I-65 north to exit 112, then west into town, roughly 45 minutes. No local transit worth mentioning. Park anywhere on the square or on side streets — free, no meters, two-hour limit posted but rarely enforced.

Are the shops on Main Street open on Sunday?

Mostly no. Reading Rock Books opens 1pm-5pm Sunday, and The 615 does Sunday brunch until 2pm. Everything else is closed. Come Tuesday through Saturday if you actually want to shop.

Is there parking on Main Street?

Yes, free angled parking directly on Main and free lots one block over on 6th and 7th Avenue. It fills up on Saturday farmers-market mornings (April-October) but never otherwise.
