The area most first-time visitors wrongly skip is Adams. It’s 10 miles west of Springfield on Highway 41, has fewer than 600 residents, and is home to the Bell Witch Cave and Bellwood Cemetery — the whole reason a lot of people come to Robertson County in the first place. There are no hotels in Adams itself, so book Springfield or Cross Plains and drive; the cave is only open seasonally and tour times fill up on October weekends weeks in advance.
The booking trap is assuming Springfield is a Nashville suburb priced like one. It isn’t — it’s a working tobacco-and-farm county seat with limited inventory, so when the Fairgrounds host a horse show, a gun show or the September fair, the whole town sells out and rates in Portland and Goodlettsville jump too. Check the Robertson County Fairgrounds event calendar before you lock in dates, and if you see anything listed, either book six weeks out or shift to Hendersonville or Gallatin on the Sumner County side.
Where to stay in Springfield, Tennessee
Most visitors base themselves in one of four places: Downtown Springfield around the Robertson County Courthouse and Historic Main Street, the chain-hotel cluster near Highway 431 and I-24 exit 35 at Cross Plains, White House along I-65 exit 108, or across the county line at Goodlettsville exit 97. Downtown puts you within a short walk of the 5th Avenue shops and the Old Jail Museum but has only a handful of rooms, mostly small inns and B&Bs. The Highway 431 corridor and White House run cheaper and are where the branded mid-scale hotels sit, typically $95–$140 a night midweek.
For quieter stays, Cedar Hill, Adams, Orlinda and Coopertown are farm country with occasional cabins and farm-stays rather than hotels — pretty but you’ll drive 15–25 minutes for dinner. Greenbrier and Ridgetop are commuter towns with limited rooms, useful only if you’re attending something specific at the Fairgrounds or on Kilgore Trace. Portland (exit 117) and Millersville (exit 98) are the overflow when Nashville events push prices up; Gallatin and Hendersonville over on Old Hickory Lake are worth considering if you want water access, and Clarksville is 40 minutes west via Highway 49 through Adams if Fort Campbell is on your plan.

April and May are the sweet spot — highs in the 70s, dogwoods out around Historic Main Street, and rooms still in the $100–$130 band before summer. June through August is hot and humid (mid-90s isn’t unusual), and rates climb whenever Nashville has a big weekend, which spills demand up I-65 into White House and Millersville. The Robertson County Fair in early September is the single biggest local rate spike; if the Fairgrounds are booked, plan on $170+ or stay in Portland or Goodlettsville.
October is the other strong month — leaves turning across the Highland Rim, the Bell Witch Fall Festival in Adams, and comfortable 60s–70s daytime temperatures. November through February is genuinely cheap, often $75–$95 at the Highway 431 chains, with the trade-off that some downtown shops close early and tobacco-barn scenery is bare. March brings the CMA Fest lead-up in Nashville, which starts to pull rooms in Goodlettsville and Hendersonville even though it’s still 30 miles from the action.
