Six honest plate-lunch counters within 30 minutes of Springfield, ranked by what actually lands on the plate.

1. Springfield Cafe on 5th Avenue

This is the one locals send their in-laws to, and there's a reason. The rotating meat board runs four proteins daily — fried chicken and country-fried steak every day, plus two that rotate between meatloaf, pork chop, roast beef and catfish on Fridays. A three-vegetable plate with meat is $12.95, and the vegetables are not warmed-over. The turnip greens have actual pork in them, the mac and cheese sets up properly, and the cornbread arrives hot without being asked.

Get there by 11:30 a.m. or after 1 p.m. — the Robertson County courthouse lunch crowd fills the room between those hours and the wait creeps past 25 minutes. Cash and card both work. This ranks first because it is the only place on the list where every category — meat, vegetable, bread, dessert, sweet tea — is at least a B+, and the fried chicken is an A. Save room for the coconut pie.

2. Thomas Drugs, Cross Plains

Not strictly a meat-and-three — it is a working 1940s pharmacy soda fountain — but the plate-lunch board runs Monday through Friday and it belongs on this list. A meat with two sides runs $9.50, which is the cheapest full lunch within 30 miles. The chicken and dumplings on Wednesday sell out by 12:45; get there at noon. The pinto beans come with chow-chow, and the fried okra is fresh, not from a bag.

After lunch, order a hand-dipped chocolate shake ($4.75) at the fountain counter, which has original 1940s fixtures and a soda jerk who has worked there over 20 years. Seating is limited — eight stools and four small tables — so this is not a group destination. Ranked second because the food is genuinely good and the room is the room; you cannot replicate it. Bring cash to be safe, though they do take cards now.

3. The Front Porch, Greenbrier

On Highway 41 in Greenbrier, this is the plate-lunch spot that fills up with contractors and county road crews at 11 a.m. sharp. A meat and three sides is $11.50, and the fried catfish on Friday is the reason to time your visit for the end of the week — it comes out crackling, not soggy, and the hushpuppies actually have onion in them. Weekday breakfast (biscuits and gravy, $6.25) is also strong.

The room is basic — vinyl booths, fluorescent light, no atmosphere — but the food does the work. Service is fast because they know their crowd has 45-minute lunch breaks. This ranks third because the vegetables are not as consistent as Springfield Cafe (the green beans can be flat) but the fried items are excellent. If you’re only there for chicken tenders and slaw, bump it up to second.

4. Miss Mary's Kitchen, White House

Off Highway 76 in White House, Miss Mary's opened in 2019 and has settled into a real following. The plate is $13.95, a dollar higher than most competitors, but the portions are 20 percent bigger and the mac and cheese is baked with a crust, not stirred from a steam table. The pot roast on Tuesdays is the standout — slow-cooked, falls apart with a fork, served with real gravy.

The room is bright and clean, which counts for some diners and against for others who want fluorescent-and-formica authenticity. Weekend brunch adds shrimp and grits ($14.50) that would not embarrass Nashville. This ranks fourth because it is drifting slightly upscale — priced above the county average — and the vegetable selection is narrower, usually four options instead of eight. Still worth the 15-minute drive from Springfield.

5. Bell Witch Café, Adams

On Highway 41 in Adams, this is a tourist-adjacent stop for Bell Witch Cave visitors, but the plate lunch is real. $10.75 for a meat and two, with a small salad bar included. The fried chicken livers — a divisive item — are the best in the county for those who order them. The green beans are canned and taste like it; the mashed potatoes are instant. Know what you’re ordering.

The pie case is the actual attraction. Chocolate meringue, coconut cream, and a seasonal fruit pie change weekly, all made on-site, $4.50 a slice. This ranks fifth because half the menu is C-grade and half is legitimately great; you need to order strategically. Pair it with the Bell Witch tour and you have a good afternoon. Don’t drive over just for lunch — the higher-ranked places are worth the extra 15 minutes.

6. Ridgetop Family Restaurant

South on Highway 41 in Ridgetop, this is the classic small-town diner: booths, a counter, a coffee pot that never empties. The lunch plate is $10.95, and the meatloaf on Thursdays has a following. The country ham breakfast plate ($9.75) is the real reason to come — thick-cut, salty, served with red-eye gravy and grits that are stone-ground, not instant.

The vegetable game is weaker than the top four on this list; the greens can be over-boiled and the corn is from a can. The fried apples are excellent. This ranks last not because it's bad but because it is coasting on decades of goodwill and the ceiling is lower than the competition. If you are already in Ridgetop or Goodlettsville, absolutely stop; if you are choosing where to drive from Springfield for a meat-and-three, pick one of the first three.

The questions people ask about Greenbrier, answered with this month’s numbers.

What day is best for meat-and-three?

Wednesday and Friday. Wednesday because chicken and dumplings appears on most rotations; Friday because catfish is the standard special and it's usually fresh in that morning. Monday is the weakest day — leftover vegetables from the weekend show up as specials — and Saturday hours vary wildly by location.

Do any of these take reservations?

None of them. Meat-and-three is a walk-in format by definition. Arrive at 11:00 a.m. for a table without a wait, or after 1:15 p.m. once the lunch rush clears. Groups over six should call ahead just so the kitchen can prep, but you still won’t get a held table.

What's the tipping expectation?

Fifteen to twenty percent on the total, same as anywhere. Servers at these places work fast turnover, refill tea constantly, and split tips with the kitchen at some spots. A $12 plate with tea comes to around $14 — tip on the pre-tax total is fine, most locals round up to $17 in cash.
